I don't think so. Dating sites have its own purpose that is different from social networking sites I mean I think that it can't kill dating sites because who are directly hoping to find a partner in life would prefer dating sites than social networking sites. Social networking sites in general are for those who wants to connect with friends and business colleague, not particularly for those who are looking for mate.

The 'networking' functionality of social sites is working its way into dating sites, but niche dating sites such as married dating sites will, for obvious reasons, stay pretty much off the standard social networking sites, thankfully!

There are many different reasons for the increased interest towards online dating. Firstly the subject has been a very talked about issue within the media and people’s understanding is beginning to grow which leads them to become more confident and comfortable having a go themselves. The stigma that has been previously attached to Internet dating has long vanished and people are now much more welcoming towards the idea. With Internet and laptops becoming a everyday necessity in most households, joining up has never been so easy.

As the temperatures across the UK shows no sign of improving, we can all happily sit back and see all those singletons finding a bit of winter romance for themselves. Lets just hope they will all be able to make it to their first dates!

I totally disagree with this point that "Are social networks going to kill dating websites??". Even there are some Trusted Dating sites in which many people had got their best mates. I also believe that dating sites are far better than the social networking sites if you want to date a person.

How you start out with Google AdWords can set the scene for plain sailing or digging yourself out of a hole later on down the line. If you’re dipping your toe into the waters of Google AdWords, here are a few tips to – hopefully – help you avoid some of the common pitfalls and escape picking up those dreaded poor Quality Scores.

Discover your campaigns’ core search terms

One of the most important first tasks is the generation of the core list of keywords used in a campaign. There are the obvious ones to use, but there are a whole host of keywords you won’t have thought of either. There are a number of keyword discovery tools out there, but they’re going to cost you money. To keep your costs down, Google’s own Keyword Tool should do everything you need to begin with. This is doing an increasingly good job of discovering useful search terms for you to add to your campaigns.

Access the Keywords Tool under the “Opportunities” tab within your Adwords account, enter keywords that you’d like to use (or enter your web address for Google to crawl and suggest), and the Keyword Tool starts suggesting keywords for you to add. For each keyword, it will show you how competitive each term is, global and local search volumes, plus integration with Google Insights, so you can see how the popularity of that search term has changed (or not) over time. NB – when you’re at the point of adding keywords, remember that Google will automatically add these terms as broad match.

The other good way to come up with your core terms is to see what the competition is up to. Using Google’s Ad Preview Tool (a tool for advertisers to check their ads are showing), start searching on different terms to see which competitors pop up, and at what ad positions. Another tool you can use for this is keywordspy.co.uk, which will show you the terms your competitors are using (although it won’t tell you which terms are working really well for them, though!).

Finally, scour the news, and talk to your friends and family to find out the terms that people would use to find your services. At the end of this exercise, you should have arrived at a pretty exhaustive list of terms you’d like to advertise on. The next stage is to put them into some order.

Group your keywords tightly

Now you’ve got your keyword list, the next task is to group them intelligently into AdGroups. Good click through rates (CTRs) will come when the keyword, the adtext and your landing page are tightly themed. CTRs are a vital ingredient in your eventual Quality Score, so it’s important to get this stage right, and proceed with slowly and carefully. The worst thing you can do is to lump a host of questionable or very broad keywords into an adgroup. You’ll come out of the gate with poor quality scores and spend the next stage digging yourself out of a hole rather than smoothly expanding your campaigns.

So, look at your keywords and organise them into groups that make sense to your potential visitor. And use broad carefully. If you think your budget is going to run away from you, or if the terms are just too broad, try phrase match to start with. As well as protecting your budget, using phrase match should help protect your initial Quality Scores.

Create targeted ads

When it comes to writing your ads, we’ll go into tips on this in subsequent posts, but to start with make sure you follow some simple rules:

    * Forget about trying to cram your whole sales pitch into your ad. You only have space for a clearly worded offer plus a) a clear, concise benefit statement and b) a call to action.
* Your ad text should reflect the search term you’re bidding on, particularly in the Ad Title. For example, if you’re bidding on “singles in Yorkshire”, that phrase should be reflected in your Ad Title and possibly your destination url (and on your landing page too, but we’ll get onto that another time.)
* Write three variations of your ad (more than three is overkill at this stage), enabling you quickly to weed out the ads that don’t work. Google will automatically present the ad that performs the best (if you allow it to), but it’s worth monitoring, and adding new ads to test as you weed out the poorer ones.
* Test the display url. This gives you an opportunity to target your ads even more tightly (eg “YourDatingSite.com/Singles_in_Yorkshire). However, while it can give your ad more relevance, users are a bit less predictable. Sometimes targeted display urls work, sometimes they don’t, so it’s best to test and stick with what works.

Set up a Brand Campaign

If you’re literally just starting out, your site may not have been indexed by Google yet, or not rank that highly. This can be a problem, as people coming back to your site won’t be able to find it! Therefore, it’s best to set up a campaign solely with all the variations of your brand name. This will cost you money in the short term, but it will ensure you’re not losing those valuable browsers to your competitors!

Monitor from launch

Once you’ve gone live, it’ll take a while for Google to find a level for your new campaign(s). So don’t be too worried if the CPC is high to begin with. If you’ve followed the steps above, and take things slowly, your quality scores will build over time, thereby bringing your CPCs down. Also, check your campaigns regularly to see how your broad and phrase matches are going.

Finally, use the Search Query Reports to weed out terms that are driving you loads of traffic but no sales.

If you have any questions about your own AdWords campaigns, email timtaylor@vedenti.com, or leave a comment.

Introduction

This is the first of many articles Tim’ll be writing over the coming months about how you can improve your online marketing and drive more, qualified leads to your dating site. The key areas he’ll cover are PPC, SEO and Conversion Maximisation (how to get the most out of every click). These are the areas you simply have to get right to create a successful dating business online. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, and he’ll try and answer them either directly or through this blog.

Article # 1 – 15.1.10
Go for growth – but gently does it…

So you’ve got good, stable AdWords campaigns. You’ve got respectable Clickthrough Rates and Quality Scores across the board, and your Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is on the button.

The question most of us reach at some time is how to expand these campaigns. You love the traffic you’re getting, and you want more of it, right?

Here are a few simple tips for anyone who’s fortunate to be in this position. Increasing your traffic can be done, but it’s usually at a price somewhere and there are pitfalls to avoid along the way.

    * 1. Identify the Return On Investment (ROI) you can afford.

When you start to go for growth, it’s worth accepting up front that your advertising costs will usually increase, thereby affecting your ROI. So before you start, make sure you sit down and find out the highest cost per paying subscriber (or CPA) you’re prepared to accept. Doing this exercise up front will mean 1) you have a benchmark to manage things against and 2) you won’t lose your nerve as you see costs increasing! As long as costs stay within the tolerance you have set yourself, everything’s going to be OK.

    * 2. See where else you can use what you’ve already got

If your campaigns are working on Google, the chances are they’ll do OK on Yahoo! and Bing too. The CPCs are generally lower, but so are the conversion rates, so don’t assume you can just upload your existing campaigns and expect boatloads more of good, converting traffic. You’ll have to start on these search engines in much the same way as you did on Google. Start small and focused and build on your successes. Get it right, and you’ve increased your traffic by 10-20% already. The downside? Yahoo! and Bing have pretty much copied Google’s adwords functionality, but they still have their own idiosyncrasies, which means even though your traffic may have increased, the time it takes you to administer these campaigns just increased significantly too. Best advice – start small and take your time to assess if the benefits outweigh the increased admin!

    * 3. Expand on your best-performing terms

Assuming you’re using conversion tracking of some kind in your campaigns (and if you’re not – what are you doing?!), you’ll know which of your terms are performing well (and of course which ones aren’t!). This tip shows you a way to expand on these terms sensibly, within the Google Adwords tools. To expand on your good performing broad terms, go to the keyword in question within your Google account. Select the keyword, and a meaningful time period (45 days will do). Click on the “See Search Terms” dropdown, and choose “Selected”. This will show you all the search queries used which triggered your broad keyword. See which ones are generating good traffic, and add them to your campaign (make sure you keep your adgroups tightly themed as you add terms!). Depending on the keyword, you may be better off using phrase matching rather than broad on these newly added terms, to ensure you’re still controlling the quality of traffic coming through (for example, broad terms like ‘dating’ will drive you tons of traffic unchecked – and not all of it great, either – so it is advisable to keep terms such as this as exact and phrase until you know what you’re dealing with).

    * 4. Keep an eye on your negatives

As you expand your broad match terms, make sure you’re paying equal attention to your list of negative keywords. With these new broad and phrase matches you’re introducing, it’s inevitable that you’ll be attracting some unwanted traffic too. Use the Search Query Reports in the Google Reporting Interface to identify these rogues, and add them to your negatives. Keeping on top of your negatives enables you to employ your broad matching with confidence.

    * 5. Expand out Geographically

You’ll notice that a lot of your broad and phrase terms are pulling in visitors looking for dating sites covering their own area, so why not reward these people with a better, more targeted search experience? Choose two or three of your top performing generic terms, three or four top cities or towns and combine to create geographic-specific search terms (eg “dating sites Manchester”). Create two or three compelling location-specific ads for each location adgroup so you can test which performs the best. Once again, make sure you keep an eye on your negatives list, and once you’re seeing positive results from these three or four towns, then you can start to expand your cities & towns adgroups. We’ll cover geography-specific landing pages in another article later in the series.

Summary

There are quite a few good ways you can expand your campaigns successfully beyond simply increasing bids, and I’ve touched on only a few here. Later on in the series, we’ll look at some other tactics you can try too. The key thing to have in the back of your head, though, is how much Return On Investment (and extra work on your part) you’re willing to sacrifice. Good luck!

Reports can be fun as well as informative

At dating factory we can run reports on just about anything to give you a detailed insight into the profile of the paying customer. Some of the most interesting ones are based on criteria coming from the questionnaire that people fill out when registering.

Today I just couldn’t resist running a report on some of our casual sites comparing payments to size (or claimed size) of the male members “member”.

The results were a real eye opener, well one eye at least. As an average across a dozen sites in 4 different countries the conversion rate from free member to paid was a respectable 14%. The really stunning statistic was the conversion to paying member of the people who had taken the time to fill out the information describing the size of their manhood.

9% of all people who registered took the time to tell us how big they felt their penis is. Of this 9% a stunning average of 66% converted to paying members. Now there are four possible answers to the question, “Dear Member, how big is your member?” These start at “Not too big”, then move on to a modest “Just about average” then they are given the choice between “Bigger than average” and finally “Really Huge”.

This is how their conversions measured up compared to the long term running average:

    * Not too big         - 36.67%
* Just average        - 59.56%
* Bigger than average     - 67.53%
* Really Huge - 101.72% (yes someone paid twice!!)

Taken in the context as a percentage of the total paying members; this group account for 46% of the total paying members from these sites.

Joking apart, what this tells us, is not just that we need to target guys who brag about the size of their manhood. This generally leads us to the conclusion that the more we engage with our members the more likely we are to have them pay for membership.

I find the most interesting part of this is that these are all people who engaged with the website in a much more in depth way than the other 91% who registered and as such were much more committed to the community they joined.

My take away is that we must engage much more and a much more personal level with our members if we can do that we will move revenues onto a totally different level.

An amusing footnote to my previous posting.

It seems in Germany at least there is a great need for people to spice up their love lives.

I was just out to lunch with my wife in Hannover. On the way back to the office I happened to read a news screen in the underground that sheds a depressing light on the level of bedroom activity in Germany during this “cold snap”.

Instead of getting closer to their men to warm themselves up this winter, it seems that German woman have found an infinitely less exciting way to keep their temperatures high. German shops are reporting a record year in the sales of hot water bottles, almost all have been sold to women of all ages.

Maybe that’s why the men have started looking elsewhere for a little action. However on the plus side, it does mean that we won’t have as many women misusing our legs to warm their incredibly cold feet on. I can think of more fun ways of getting the circulation going though.

With the entire North Hemisphere in the grip of the worst winter in 30 years (that’s what Sky News says anyway), the online Dating Industry is hoping for a winter boom.

It’s true that online businesses generally do better in bad weather as people stay at home more; however there is a big portion of normal seasonal activity as well.

I’ve been doing this for quite a few years now and historically December is poor. People are tied up in a series of parties and family events and this December was no exception. January so far has all the signs of being a record month, again that’s traditionally what happens. After two weeks at home with the family everyone is out looking for something new in their lives.

We at Dating Factory of course have to take into account that we are not UK/US centric, indeed a lot of our traffic comes from the Alpine States and Italy, all of whom are wondering what all the fuss is about, it’s only snow!!

Why am I making this point? Well it would be sad if the industry only got a January boost every 30 years. In my experience this is an annual trend you can track quite accurately. In some markets the weather may be causing this effect to be a little more exaggerated but largely it’s business as usual.

It would be sad if we’d spent all this money on systems, user experience and marketing to find out that we as an industry should be compared to the cycles of the taxi business. I think what we’ve built is much more substantial and robust than that.

Or alternatively “I have 2861 friends on Facebook and I still can’t find anyone to Shag”

17th Nov 09 – I was having lunch with an old friend of mine who works at a Venture fund in London the other day. I was telling him about what we are up to at Dating Factory and how well things are moving along for us.

Of course working for a Venture Fund, he is an “expert” on every single aspect of every technology on the internet. His throw away comment was that Social Networks such as Facebook or StudiVZ will ultimately kill the dating sites as they are free. There are precedents of course, the original community, Friends Reunited went from being the biggest social network on the planet to irrelevance in a matter of months after they asked people to pay to be a member.

My argument is that Facebook is where you have your public face and your current friends; it’s not where you look for a date. If you could get a date with one of your Facebook connections you probably would have.

If you are looking for a date, sooner or later you are going to have to look outside your circle of friends. Needing a date is also a very private thing and Facebook is a very public place. This need for privacy is greatly heightened when you move into the Casual Dating or Niche Dating arena; it’s not everyone who is looking for an affair that wants everyone at his company in the City of London to know about it. It’s not every transvestite that wants the rest of Parliament to know about it. Anything that moves slightly outside of the accepted norms for behaviour has to be kept private.

At the end of our lunch in SoHo we walked out of the restaurant to be confronted by a sign advertising a book in a small book shop. This book had the excellent if a little long title “I have 2861 friends on Facebook and I still can’t find anyone to Shag”.

As we both looked at it and laughed I was left with the only obvious comment, “I rest my case”!!

24th Nov 09 – In these days of Twitter, Facebook, Delicious etal it’s easy to fall into the trap that all you have to do, is attract the web savvy 18 – 24 year old. The problem with this group is the age old one, they have no money and they are brilliant and finding ways of getting things for free.

Most of the cool, buzzy places on the web are much written about and lauded as the brave new world; however none of them make any money.

In the pre internet world this usually revolved around getting free drinks, my girlfriend of that time was a master (or mistress) of getting free drinks by flirting with older guys at a bar and coming back with cocktails for two when we were broke.

In the dating industry some of the white label providers have adopted the Twitter look and feel to attract the web savvy marketer and have an office full of pretty young things, who presumably spend their weekends extracting free drinks out of guys my age who are gullible enough to think that they are genuinely interested in them.

That my friends, fun though it is, isn’t the target market for the online dating industry. If you are running sites on dating factory and you take a look of at the payment statistic by age you will see that over 70% of payments come from the 35 to 50 year olds.

In the romantic dating world this is 50:50 men and women. Normally these are divorcees trying to find someone without going through the horror of going back onto the bars and club circuit, trying to “pull”.

In the casual world, it’s predominately married middle-aged men. Their wives are no longer interested as they have their children now. Pre-internet, these guys used to withdraw to their garden sheds with their collection of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath LP’s a case of beer and a porn magazine and wonder where it all went wrong.

These days the casual dating site is the virtual garden shed of choice, the contact they get on the site lets them feel wanted and desirable again. This doesn’t involve hanging out on street corners or buying mags from the top shelf.

Just plug your iPod in and bring up your 70’s or 80’s classics and lose yourself online in email and chat with attainable desirable and more importantly loose women for the evening.

So when targeting your marketing spend for a dating site, think not of where to tap into the Twitter generation but more where to find the late 30’s to early 50’s, if you achieve that you will find your conversions of free members to paid going through the roof.

Or to put in another way – “our stand is where???”

Datingfactory.com,in the shape of George Carter and Mark Harrison travelled to Vienna last week to exhibit at the Europewebtainment event in Vienna, a key show for webmasters and webmarketers in the German speaking world. Sadly when we arrived only half of our equipment for the show was there and the stand itself was missing.

24 hours later the hapless TNT had traced the stand to Bucharest and had it on the way back. The first day of the show we attracted traffic mainly through pre arranged meetings and George physically dragging people to the pitch where our stand should have been, this was a surprisingly successful tactic and even under these circumstances we made some good progress.

Day 3 of the show our stand had finally arrived from its Romanian odyssey which made attracting people to the stand substantially easier. We talked our voices away in an endless stream of demos and by the end of the show the first webmasters had registered their first sites. We’ll be contacting them in the course of the week to follow up and get their marketing campaigns up and running.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to come and talk to us about Datingfactory.com
